Ms Avril Gannon is the sedation nurse at Fairview Dental Clinic. She has received her training from SAAD (Society for the advancement of Anaesthesia in Dentistry).
Prior to having dental treatment carried out under conscious sedation it is imperative to be medically assessed by Dr Mc Allister. This can be done at the same time as having a dental examination. This is in accordance with best practice models to ensure that sedation is appropriate for the patient. Here at Fairview Dental Clinic the fitness scale as set out by the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) is employed to determine suitability for treatment. The Indicator of Sedation Needs scale is also used.
Sedative drugs are used to reduce anxiety therefore allowing dental treatment to be carried out in a more relaxed environment. We use a single drug, Midazolam. The amount of drug used is unique to each individual. Fixed doses are not administered. The amount of drug used is titrated to each individual.
Throughout the sedation procedure the patient is monitored continuously by the sedationist and the sedation trained dental nurse. It is accepted practice that the dental and sedation procedures can be performed by one person or two separate practitioners.
Two staff members are present with the patient at all times.
When having conscious sedation you will be in a deeply relaxed state. At all times you will be able to respond to the dentist.
